Childproofing your home is especially important for your child with Down syndrome. Here are some problem areas with suggestions for solutions.
Outlets: Sliding outlet covers.
Stairways: Gates.
Stove: Stove guard.
Oven: Oven lock.
Toilet: Toilet lock.

Other suggestions include
Doorstops with removable rubber tips( the #1 choking hazard in homes): one piece doorstops.
Top-heavy furniture: Bolt to wall.
Sharp edges and corners: Corner protectors and foam pads.
Long cords on mini-blinds: Cut loop open, use cord winders.

Childproofing products are available at Sears and Wal-mart and many other stores. Contact your local Fire Department to obtain "Tot Finder Stickers" to place on your child’s bedroom window in the case of a fire. Firefighters will be able to locate your child quickly.
Many wooden bunkbeds and portable cribs have been recalled. The Consumer Products Safety Commission has extensive information on recalled products.
